Withdrawal / Repeat Course Deadline: Thursday 4/14

The deadline for undergraduates to withdraw from Spring classes is Thursday, April 14th.  The 14th is also the deadline to file a “Repeat Course” form.

Deciding whether to withdraw from a course can be really difficult. You’ll receive a “W” for the course(s) on your transcript, which is not ideal, but may be preferable to a lower/failing grade. Furthermore, a withdrawal may affect your status as a full-time student, and it may mean that you’ll need a summer or intersession class in order to complete your degree as planned.

Thinking about course withdrawals has gotten the old Kenny Rogers song “The Gambler” stuck in my head. If you weren’t alive in the late ‘70s or ‘80s and you’re not from the south, you might not know it, but the key lyrics are:

You gotta know when to hold ‘em / know when to fold ‘em
Know when to walk away / know when to run

This song is a classic because even those of us who are not poker players can relate to the challenge of trying to figure out when to give up on something and when to try to stick with it and work through a difficult situation. Your advisement dean, faculty advisors, instructors, and parents can be helpful resources in making this kind of decision.
