Neuroscience Club Meeting: Wed, 10/16, Student Center room 142, 11:40-12:40

Dr. Elisabeth Ploran will present: “Accumulating evidence towards a perceptual decision: When ‘A-ha!’ is really prefaced by ‘Maybe, sorta, kinda?’”

How is it that we can identify a friend amidst the various moving faces and bodies of a crowd in flux? Even when our brain is faced with many distractors and obstructions, it still seems to resolve the perceptual problem- “is this my friend or is it not?” Using a novel trial structure in combination with fMRI, we are able to get a glimpse of the neural processes underlying perceptual decision-making and can begin to determine which areas of the brain are working hard to accumulate enough evidence to confirm a decision.
