Mind and Development lab manager position

The Mind and Development Lab at UC San Diego, directed by Dr. Adena Schachner, is seeking a full-time lab manager/ research coordinator to start in Summer 2016. This person will work closely with other lab members to assist in all aspects of running the lab and conducting research.

Research in the lab investigates social cognition and cognitive development, with current projects on how infants, children and adults understand others’ actions, as well as the objects they own and create “by inferring others’€™ goals, preferences and social history. The lab maintains a secondary focus on music cognition, with a particular interest in links between music and social cognition. We employ looking-time, eye-tracking, and behavioral methods with young children and adults (including testing online via Amazon Mechanical Turk), and collect data both in the lab and at museums and preschools in the community. The lab coordinator will work closely with graduate and undergraduate researchers to assist in all aspects of running the lab and conducting research: Responsibilities include recruiting and scheduling infant, toddler and adult study participants; maintaining a database of recruitment information; conducting behavioral studies with infants and children; and managing experimental data. The lab coordinator will also train and supervise undergraduate research assistants, assist with data analysis, maintain lab equipment and supplies, and assist with literature searches and writing.

The position offers substantial research experience and the potential for co-authorship on posters and manuscripts, and is ideal for recent graduates looking for research experience before joining a PhD program in Psychology or Cognitive Science. The successful candidate will join a vibrant, collaborative research community at UCSD (http://psychology.ucsd.edu/; http://www.cogsci.ucsd.edu/).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, or a related field
  • A minimum of one year of experience working in a lab, and demonstrated interest in behavioral or developmental research
  • Experience working with infants, children, and parents, preferably in a research setting
  • Strong organization, time management and communication skills (including writing skills); administrative or managerial experience preferred
  • Self-motivated and able to troubleshoot problems independently
  • Comfortable managing and working with others
  • Knowledge of Excel, experience with statistical software (such as R, SPSS, or JMP), and some programming experience (such as Matlab, Python, or JavaScript) is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with database management (such as FileMaker software) and web design is preferred but not required.

Position begins ~July 1, 2016, with flexibility to begin up to a month earlier or later. Minimum 1-2 year commitment. Pay and benefits commensurate with experience, according to the UCSD Lab Assistant II scale.
