Patient and Family Care intern at Northwell

Spring internships are available in the Sylvia M. Lester Patient & Family Centered Care Department at North Shore University Hospital which helps facilitate communication between patients, families and hospital staff and promotes patient and family centered care. The goal of the Department is to strengthen partnerships with our patients, families, staff and the community.

Spring Internship Program Offerings:
• Exposure to the concept of Patient and Family Centered Care within a complex health care setting fosters lasting attitudes and practices
• Learn about the promotion of Patient and Family Centered Care through staff education and programming including Pet Therapy, Child Life, Artist in Residence and Integrative Therapies (Holistic Nursing, Reiki and the Cosmetology Program.)
• Communication with a dedicated mentor
• Completion of performance evaluations for both the mentor and the intern

Role of Patient and Family Centered Care Intern:
• Work with interdisciplinary team: Volunteers, Nurse Managers, Service Line and Department Directors, Physicians, Quality Management, Social Work, Case Management and Chaplaincy Care
• Shadow patient rounds, patient/family meeting and support groups
• Attend staff and or department meetings
• Support Maternal/Child Family Advisory Committee by collaborating with patients, families and staff on hospital projects such as facility design and policies
• Review various policies and procedures pertaining to the department
• Learn hospital complaint policy and procedures and assist with escalating patient and family concerns
• Track and maintain compliant database
• Assist with monthly reports and data collection for the PICG and hospital leadership
• Engage and educate patient’s about FollowMyHealth Patient Portal

Duration: 2017 Spring Semester
Location: North Shore University hospital
Requirements: Must be a college undergraduate with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, submission of letter of intent, official college transcript, letter of recommendation and resume. Applicants must be available 3 days a week.
